STORIES: Job Readiness Training Program Highlights Resilience and Empowerment with Guest Speaker Mr. Louis Turner Jr.
Roseland, Chicago, IL — April 15, 2026 — The Job Readiness Training Program (JRT) is proud to spotlight an inspiring story of resilience, service, and community empowerment through its recent guest speaker, Mr. Louis Turner Jr. Mr. Turner shared his remarkable journey and expertise in security training with program participants, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance, professionalism, and community contribution.
Mr. Turner’s career began with distinguished service as a Marine, where he spent two years with an elite military unit. Despite facing racial discrimination—including a harrowing incident involving an attack by Klansmen—Mr. Turner’s resilience and fighting spirit allowed him to overcome adversity. His military career was further impacted by exposure to the contaminated water crisis at Camp Lejeune, which contributed to his later diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
After his military service, Mr. Turner returned to Chicago, joining the AFLCIO Labor Local 4 Union in construction and working in private security. In 2016, he founded The Shield (TNN), a Security and Firearms Training School, to provide both armed and unarmed security courses. Today, Mr. Turner teaches security courses for the state of Illinois and actively mentors young people, especially within the Black community.
During his visit to the JRT program, Mr. Turner shared valuable insights on the importance of customer service, legal knowledge, and professionalism in security work. He also addressed the stereotypes faced by young Black men and women, encouraging participants to focus on self-improvement and community contribution. Mr. Turner assists with job placement and referrals, seeking candidates who are patient, studious, and eager to learn.
Looking to the future, Mr. Turner aims to expand his training programs to include more young women, empowering them with critical skills for success in security careers.
