02.11.2026

Roseland, Chicago, IL — February 2, 2026 — For the past three years, the Youth Peace Center (YPC) of Roseland has been harnessing the transformative power of basketball to make a meaningful and lasting impact on at-risk youth aged 16 to 24. This initiative goes beyond simply playing the game; it serves as a vital platform to teach conflict resolution, judgment, self-control, and teamwork in a safe and nurturing environment. Through this program, young people are encouraged to channel their energy positively and develop crucial life skills that extend far beyond the court.

Participants practice twice a week, honing their basketball skills while also building camaraderie and trust among peers. On weekends, they compete in up to three games against other nonprofit organizations, fostering healthy competition and community connection. This consistent engagement provides a structured, positive outlet for youth, helping to steer them away from violence and negative influences that are often prevalent in their environments.

Since its inception, the program has maintained an outstanding safety record—there have been no violent incidents during practices or games. This safe space allows young people to express themselves freely, learn from their experiences, and develop self-discipline. Beyond the physical activity, the program emphasizes important life lessons such as managing conflicts peacefully, making sound judgments, and exercising self-control, skills that youth carry into their daily lives and future endeavors.

The program also offers unique opportunities for youth to broaden their horizons. Participants are taken on trips to NBA Bulls games, giving them firsthand exposure to professional sports and inspiring them to dream big. Additionally, during practices and games, youth are provided with meals, ensuring they are nourished and cared for. As a token of appreciation for their commitment and effort, they also receive gift cards, reinforcing their value and encouraging continued participation.

At the end of each season, the youth gather for a special Award Banquet to celebrate their achievements. In the spirit of inclusion, every participant receives an award, recognizing their growth, dedication, and teamwork. This event serves as a reminder that every young person’s effort matters and that success is a collective celebration. It fosters a sense of pride and community among the youth, reinforcing the values of respect, perseverance, and mutual support.

Overall, YPC’s basketball program has become a cornerstone of positive youth development in Roseland. By combining sport, education, and community engagement, it provides young people with a safe space to learn, grow, and succeed—one game at a time. Through this initiative, YPC continues to empower youth to build brighter futures for themselves and their communities, demonstrating the profound impact that sports can have in shaping lives.
