R3

Empowering Youth Through Prevention, Preparation, and Play

The R3 Program, an innovative initiative of the Youth Peace Center State Program, brings together vital services to combat youth violence and foster positive development. It combines violence prevention efforts through the CRED program with community engagement activities. R3 features two core programs: Job Readiness & Training, designed to prepare youth for meaningful employment, and Basketball & Mentoring, which promotes teamwork, leadership, and healthy relationships. Our goal is to build resilience, respect, and tangible results that strengthen youth and uplift communities.

Mission: R3 aims to reduce youth violence, promote personal and professional development, and cultivate leadership through a holistic approach that combines skill-building, mentorship, and positive recreational activities.

Our Approach

    • CRED Program: Focuses on addressing the roots of violence among youth, providing education, conflict resolution, and life skills to foster safer communities.

    • Community Outreach: Engages youth from the neighborhood with culturally relevant activities and resources, promoting a sense of belonging and responsibility.

    • Skills Development: Offers training in essential workplace skills such as resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace etiquette.

    • Sector Opportunities: Prepares youth for careers in construction, foodservice, warehousing, and other sectors through hands-on training and certifications.

    • Employment Support: Connects youth to job opportunities and ongoing career development resources.

    • Recreational Play: Uses basketball as a platform to teach teamwork, discipline, and leadership.

    • Mentorship: Provides consistent adult mentorship to guide youth in making positive choices, setting goals, and overcoming challenges.

    • Leadership Development: Encourages youth to become community leaders and role models.

  • Violence prevention outreach, also known as community violence intervention (CVI) or street outreach, is a public health approach that uses outreach workers to identify and engage people at risk of becoming involved in violence. These programs aim to reduce violence by targeting those closest to the source, such as youth and adults between the ages of 16 to 28. Outreach workers can provide a variety of services, including:

    • Case management

    • Mentorship

    • Safe spaces

    • Connections to services and resources

    • De-escalating conflict

    • Mediation

    • Building supportive relationships

Impact of R3

The R3 program successfully engaged 45 participants, with 86% completing the training. Participants obtained essential safety certifications, including Flaggers certification, which is vital for directing traffic safely on construction sites, and completed 10 hours of OSHA training focused on workplace safety standards. These certifications not only increase their employability in safety-sensitive industries but also equip them with valuable skills to promote safer work environments. The program has empowered youth with practical knowledge and confidence to pursue careers in construction, transportation, and other fields that prioritize safety and compliance.
